Trump Deals, New Malaysia Partnership Kick Off ASEAN Summit
What’s Behind It
New Southeast Asia deals by U.S. President Donald Trump were among the headlines during the latest round of ASEAN summitry in Malaysia1. While much of the focus was unsurprisingly on the October 26 signing of what was termed the “Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords,” between Thailand and Cambodia — which occurred despite what officials privately concede are serious outstanding issues between both sides over their border war — Trump’s presence also saw the inking of several sectoral pacts with a range of Southeast Asian countries in consequential areas ranging from trade to defense to critical minerals2. Malaysia and the United States also publicized an upgrade of ties to the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership — the first formal upgrade of the bilateral relationship since the comprehensive partnership back in 2014 and the first such advance for Southeast Asia under the second Trump administration to date amid the focus on China’s own inroads.3
Select Key Recent Geopolitical and Geoeconomic Developments Amid ASEAN Summitry
The deals came amid new scheduled ASEAN deliverables with other powers and among the grouping itself. Historic announcements were released on Timor-Leste’s addition as ASEAN’s full 11th member — the first enlargement for the grouping in over a quarter century — and the status of a key geoeconomic areas such as a first-of-its-kind digital economic framework agreement4. There were also a long list of new inroads with key powers apart from the United States, despite the focus on Trump himself and newly announced U.S. deliverables. To take just one example (see below for much more), while much of the headlines were focused on India Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s virtual engagement of this round of ASEAN summitry (as opposed to in-person attendance), the designation of maritime cooperation as the designated annual ASEAN-India cooperation pillar for 2026 was nonetheless notable given the Philippines’ ASEAN chairmanship next year and the salience of the South China Sea issue5.
Why It Matters
The inroads also point to priority datapoints to watch with wider regional as well as global implications (see originally generated ASEAN Wonk table below on notable areas to monitor and additional specifics.
