What Did Asia’s Latest Big Cyber Week in Singapore Achieve?
What’s Behind It
A recently-concluded international cyber week hosted in Singapore revealed some of the ongoing developments in the sector1. This iteration of the international cyber week came amid other notable global developments2. The United Nations held its latest round of engagements on cyberspace governance which exposed divisions between competing visions ahead of United Nations Day commemorated annually on October 243. Separately, on artificial intelligence, China hit back on an earlier publicized U.S. ban on the use of Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek’s products ahead the next round of broader U.S.-China bilateral engagements hovering over the broader global geoeconomic outlook consuming policymakers heading into 20274.
Select Key Recent Regional and Global Security-Related Developments
The engagements occurred alongside other security-related regional developments. In the maritime security space, the United States, Japan and the Philippines publicized the latest trilateral maritime cooperation activity between them as new speculation emerged around coming defense engagements and their implications for flashpoints such as the South China Sea5. Separately, individual Southeast Asian governments also publicized national and cross-border actions to respond to the longstanding challenge of transboundary haze even as questions remained about wider regional responses6.
Why It Matters
The dynamics also spotlighted key datapoints with wider implications (see originally generated ASEAN Wonk table below on notable areas to monitor and additional specifics. Paying subscribers can read on for more on what to expect and future implications in the rest of the “Why It Matters” and “Where It’s Headed” sections, along with paid-only sections of the newsletter as usual).
